I’m a firm believer that whatever I need to know spirit will find a way to show it to me…
My most recent experience of this came in the form of an Instagram post on my timeline last week. The post spoke on those who have been actively working on themselves but may feel a level of unexplainable stagnation. It explained that in Igbo culture the cure for this is to return to the lands of your maternal line and notify those spirits of your situation.

This information awakened something within me and reminded me of the session I held last year titled ‘Called by the Water Spirts’. The gathering was dedicated to exploring the primordial element of water and the energies that inhabit the various bodies as expressed in African spiritual cosmologies.
The conversation specially addressed the phenomena of what is commonly known as being ‘called by the water spirits’ which refers to a widespread concept found in the traditions about water spirits choosing their priests and priestesses. One of the associations with this calling is a feeling of stagnation in one’s life until the calling is addressed, this can also include getting a shrine or going through the process of initiation.
During the conversation we shared our own stories and were blown away by how we could profoundly relate to each other’s experiences. It was a truly powerful space and it was phenomenal to be surrounded by so many kindred spirits!
I am of Jamaican heritage (both parents) and throughout the session we noticed that Jamaica kept coming up, we questioned at the time the significance of why it was continually being highlighted. I initially attributed it to always calling in my ancestors before hosting any events, so thought it was their essence that was manifesting itself.
Now several months later, I can see that I was partially correct, but this post has given me clarity on the message that was being delivered. It was talking about the importance of returning to our maternal ancestral lands to help overcome feelings of stagnation and resolving any spiritual problems. It’s also no coincidence that a few days leading up to seeing the Instagram post, I was contemplating a family trip to Jamaica.
Spirit truly talks and I share this message to highlight that every moment is an opportunity to explore and learn more when we are open to the messages all around us.
And for those who have been drawn to return to your sacred maternal lands, the home of your mother’s lineage, may you follow your internal guidance!
